The 10th Mt Gambier to Melbourne Ride, 2017

For its 10th year the Mt Gambier to Melbourne fundraising ride will be held over the Labour Day long-weekend. It has been a colossal effort riding this each year – ten is a great achievement and we want this to be the biggest yet. So come and join the Greenham family and friends cycle 450kms over 4 days (or any part of it), raising money and awareness for the international, emergency medical-aid organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

2016 was a great ride; perfect conditions and plenty of new faces. It really does become an incredible ride with extra people, no matter how short or far a distance they join for.

The ride is officially sanctioned by MSF as a fundraising event and we sincerely thank them for their support. The inspiration for these rides comes from the ethos that MSF display in providing much-needed aid to those most in need, regardless of race, religion, creed or status. Please visit the MSF website for more information on their amazing work.

The ride itinerary will be:
Friday 10 March – Depart Mount Gambier 4pm to Dartmoor 6pm, 50km
Saturday 11 March – Depart Dartmoor 8am via Port Fairy to Warrnambool 5pm, 150km
Sunday 12 March – Depart Warrnambool 8 am via Camperdown to Inverleigh 6pm, 160km
Monday 13 March – Depart Inverleigh 9am to Melbourne 2pm, 90km

Please contact Michael (0488553803) or Billy (0422424144) Greenham if you have any questions or are interested in joining some of the ride. The ride will pass through Port Fairy while the Folk Festival is in swing, and as usual there will be food stops at Camperdown and Werribee, so don’t be shy.

Mount Gambier to Melbourne, 2016

For the 9th year the Mount Gambier to Melbourne fundraising ride will be held over the Labour Day long-weekend. We want you to come and join the Greenham family and friends cycle 450kms over 4 days (or any part of it), raising money and awareness for the international, emergency medical-aid organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

2015 was our best ride yet, with over a dozen riders at different stages, and an amazing tail-wind whipping us along. Hopefully it can be even bigger this year! It really does become an incredible ride with extra people, no matter how short or far a distance they join for.

The ride is officially sanctioned by MSF as a fundraising event and we sincerely thank them for their support. The inspiration for these rides comes from the ethos that MSF display in providing much-needed aid to those most desperate, regardless of race, religion, creed or status. Please visit the MSF website for more information on their amazing work. If any reminder was necessary of their great need, the terrible hospital bombing in Kabul in October 2015 and humanitarian crises of Syria and other conflicts demonstrate exactly why we support them.

The ride itinerary will be:
Friday 11 March – Depart Mount Gambier 4pm to Dartmoor 6pm, 50km
Saturday 12 March – Depart Dartmoor 8am via Port Fairy to Warrnambool 5pm, 150km
Sunday 13 March – Depart Warrnambool 8 am via Camperdown to Inverleigh 6pm, 160km
Monday 14 March – Depart Inverleigh 9am to Melbourne 2pm, 90km

Please contact Michael (0488553803) or Billy (0422424144) Greenham if you have any questions or are interested in joining some of the ride. The ride will pass through Port Fairy while the Folk Festival is in swing, and as usual there will be food stops at Camperdown and Werribee, so don’t be shy.

Day 3 – Warrnambool to Inverleigh

Another decent tail wind and 170kms passed with far greater ease than you’d expect! Today was incomparable to last year, where we crawled between rest-stops. Today we almost didn’t want to stop! A few more crazy drivers to contend with but the weather was perfect and a group of 10 was very comfortable.
Kudos to cousin Justin who brought his hybrid along and kept up with us from Camperdown to the finish! Huge effort, looking forward to having him join us tomorrow.
A shout-out to India-Gate in Warrnambool and 153 on Manifold in Camperdown, who both had our flyers out and were happy to see us!
Foxhow was as quiet as usual – our rest stop probably tripling the population. Elly had another couple of great rides.
Thanks to Monica and Ken for hosting us again! Great way to finish, along with Jane’s big spag bol pot. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Day 2 – Dartmoor to Warrnambool

Smooth sailing on a long day – 120km at an average of 30km/h thanks to a lovely westerly tail-wind!!

Had an amazing bunch, with 13 people coming most of the way. Thanks to Geoff, Graeme & Ken for joining us Portland to Port Fairy. And of course Duncan and Andrew for coming down from Casterton and keeping us company.

Michael Jamieson has joined us from Melbourne and is doing the rest of the ride with us.

There are a few photos, although with a bit of rain some are blurry. The Folk Festival in Port Fairy was a great lunch stop.

Feeling a million times better than this time last year, where we battled a headwind all day long. Looking forward to tomorrow (tentatively) – Inverleigh here we come!

This ride is further preparation for the upcoming European ride in April-June, from Lisbon, Portugal to Lyon, France. Jordy, youngest of the three children, is finalising details on what is his gap-year adventure, raising awareness for MSF. Stay tuned for more details to come.

Mount Gambier to Melbourne Finished!

Phew!

At times it was a tough, hot slog but four cyclists completed the demanding ride from Mount Gambier to Melbourne on the longweekend. Well done to Peter and Shane Headlam, and Barb Toma who made the 465km trek with Michael to the ‘big smoke’. They enjoyed the company of many others for parts of the journey: Donald, Kerry, Duncan, Stephen, Will and Matt [from Camperdown Cycling Club], Billy, Michael, and Paul.

It was great to have Elly and Kerry as reliable support drivers too. We certainly needed all the drinks they were ferrying as temperatures were in the mid-30’s by the afternoons. Thanks to our overnight hosts: Tony and Lynnette at Warrnambool, and Monica and Ken at Inverleigh.

The ‘Cycling Across Borders’ Team certainly appreciate the support from media, and businesses en route that promote our ride and its charitable cause – Médecins Sans Frontières. We are always mindful there are a multitude of people in the world who ‘do it tougher’ than us, and require our support. Learn about the work of MSF at www.msf.org.au and donate to ‘cyclingacrossborders’ at everydayhero.com
