Bairnsdale to Beechworth 2016

Cycling Across the Divide

The Greenham family have been ‘Cycling Across Borders’, fundraising for Médecins Sans Frontières [Doctors Without Borders] for ten years; the next effort this November, endorsed by MSF Australia, will be across the Divide from Bairnsdale to Beechworth.

It’s been almost 10 years since the first Mt Gambier to Melbourne fundraising rides, with some spectacular European rides in-between. In that time we’ve raised about $10,000 for the worldwide emergency- medical, humanitarian work of MSF. MSF Australia currently has medical and logistics volunteers working across the world in places like Syria, Nigeria and Haiti. We are not medical people at all, and we have huge respect for those Australians with the skills who volunteer for these tasks…living the motto of the organisation…’Aid without Agenda, Compassion without Prejudice, Action without Silence’.

Michael and Billy commence their ‘Across the Divide’ ride on 21 November and will complete the 350 kms over the Great Dividing Range via Omeo and Mount Hotham within 5 days. The ride profile is tough – involving 3 days of steady climbing then a steep drop from Hotham to Harrietville. In Switzerland we cycled three mountain passes that were over 2000m at inclines up to 15%. But that was a 2007; we were a lot fitter and carried less gear! It looks like there will be some rain and chilly conditions, so it won’t be an easy task.
